This book has one essential aim : to question the status of the über-text - the paperback novel, poem or play that we teach in our classrooms and that we make students believe is, in its finality, an immutable work of art. Such has traditionally been the perspective in French universities where English Departments privilege the close reading of some conceptual 'super' or 'over' text, authenticated by Penguin and marketed by Amazon. Telle est traditionnellement la perspective adoptée dans les universités françaises, au sein desquelles les Départements d'Anglais privilégient souvent l'analyse fine de textes conçus comme 'super' ou 'sur' textes élevés au rang d'œuvres' et dont la primauté est entérinée par Penguin et exploitée par Amazon. De ce type d'approche à la fois pédagogique et littéraire il ressort un laissé-pour-compte : l'ur-texte, ce ou ces textes originaux qui ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la construction de l'über-text auquel nous attribuons tant d'importance.
